So after days of pleading with other countries to spred awareness about the current situation in Serbia, a tweet with a video showing police brutality got spread:

And a lot of the responses were:

Apparently only problems worth talking about are those of first-world countries. And it seems that to a lot of people Europe will always remain just England, France, Germany and Italy. And let all of us living in small countries oppresed by totalitarian regimes rot ig.

I am sick of this selective activism.

And Fuck America.

Serbia’s leader, Aleksander Vucic, is very similar to Trump in that he is more of a TV person than an actual educated politician. I think the two are even friends, or at the very least Vucic looks up to Trump.

Their issue regarding police in Serbia stems less around the BLM movement and more so around the pandemic and the country’s response to it.

When the pandemic began, they imposed what was essentially a military curfew on the people. Anyone caught outside for any reason was beaten by officers and thrown in jail. This didn’t even help flatten the curve overall because the leader continued to allow soccer matches and other big social gatherings to take place.

Not only that, but around the time of the election in June of 2020, Vucic made the abrupt claim that the virus was gone and it was safe again, and he lied about the number of cases and deaths. Obviously, this was a ploy for him to get reelected. In fact, they lied so bad that they messed up the distribution of data, so people caught on rather quickly. But either way, people believed him, he got reelected, and he immediately went back on his claim, continuing to throw people in jail if caught outside. The people were rightfully pissed and riots broke out.

So yes, Serbia does have it extremely bad. Just because it’s a small country doesn’t mean it’s issues are irrelevant, and anyone who feels they can dismiss this shit because these aren’t Americans can fuck off. You clearly don’t care about other people.

Please reblog this version of the post because no one knows anything about Serbia and they are experiencing their own Trump reign.

Fucking sick of things like this being dismissed because it’s small countries in Europe

Help raise awareness for Serbia!!

I’m not about to make another long ass post or do another GFM bc it’s actually psychologically draining and I’ve posted enough. Just a reminder that the case has been going on for an year and my sister and her husband are broke with no idea how to pay this bill that’s accumulated from trying o protect black children. If black lives matter, black girls must matter.

the absolute final hearing for this case is August 3rd which means we will owe even more money even though it’s virtual. please help if u can

Here’s a fun tale from your local Target employee:

I was pushing truck for OTC today which is the pharmacy area. I was pushing cases of hand sanitizer because we got the “good stuff” in today (purell) and it goes quick even with the the product limit put in place. People were literally taking it from my hand before I could put it on the shelf, but that’s not the point.

As I was putting the goods on the shelf, this woman comes up to the stand and she’s very excited. “Yes! You guys have it! How many can I take, is there a limit?” I say yes, 3 per person per transaction per day. She nods, accepting, and grabs her three. “Sorry, that was weird. I’m a teacher, I’m trying to stock up. I promise I’m not a hoarder.” I smile and nod and say it’s fine. She starts to walk away but stops and turns back.

“Do you have any Clorox wipes in stock by any chance?”

Heart sinking, I shake my head and say no, sorry, and we don’t know for sure when we’ll get more. (We get them maybe once every two weeks, but the product limit for those is one per person per transaction per day and they usually sell out within hours of going on the shelf.)

Her face dropped and she kinda looked down at her hand sanitizer and said “that’s okay, with the product limit I wouldn’t be able to get enough before school starts anyway. It’s only 4 weeks away.” She laughed a little but I could hear the frustration in her voice and see the tension in her face. She sounded defeated. The most I could offer her was one of the small bottles of pure bleach. I honestly wanted to cry. For a second there I thought she would. I had no clue what to say as she turned and walked away.

This is what teachers are dealing with. Even in years when there’s not a pandemic they have to rely on donations from parents or their own money to be able to buy hand sanitizer, wipes, tissues, etc. for their classrooms. Now they’re being forced to return to school with no extra funding, no extra supplies, no support from the government; they’re STILL expected to provide for and protect these kids *on their own.* All while, now, risking their own lives and their own health because the government doesn’t want to admit that they fucked up handling this pandemic.

Every time I hear someone say “kids don’t die from it, it’ll be fine,” I realize that person does not give a flying fuck about teachers. Sure, *maybe* the kids will be fine. But the teachers are not children. They are adults with underlying conditions, adults living with elderly family, adults who are over 50 and are at more risk. Adults with at risk family at home. Adults who are at risk themselves. But they are STILL trying their hardest to protect your children in the classroom.

It’s honestly fucked up that we live in a country where police departments get millions or even billions of dollars in state funding, yet teachers have to buy their own cleaning supplies and doctors have to reuse PPE in hospitals. Police get tens of thousands of dollars worth of riot armor to wear and terrorize peaceful protesters, while the Navajo Nation get sent body bags instead of medical supplies.

Honestly I don’t know where I’m going with this, but I’m tired y’all. I’m tired and frustrated because leadership in this country doesn’t care enough to prioritize human life. Idk, it was a small moment in the grand scheme of things but it really was a slap in the face reminder of how this country treats it’s own people. I feel like we’ve all been getting those lately.

Again, to reiterate: teachers are NOT getting extra funding. they are NOT getting extra supplies. they are NOT getting smaller class sizes or bigger classrooms or extra personnel whose job it is to ensure sanitation and masking protocols are adhered to.

They’re not getting temperature-taking stations that will ID kids with a fever and send them back home. They’re not being trained to handle parents who insist they and their kids don’t need to follow rules.

Trump and Devos are just “letting school districts decide.” With a side helping of threatening any school that dares to recognize COVID as a threat.

As a teacher this is seriously making me consider a career change.  Also, recent evidence is suggesting more and more that yes, kids do carry this, get sick from this, and die from this.  And who knows what lifelong complications they’re going to have.  Please write, email, or call your local school district and pressure them into going 100% online this fall.  Even if you’re not a parent, they are more intimidated by their tax payers than the teachers they’re sending to die.

Anonymous asked:

hey do you think you could expand a bit on separating the art from the artist? clearly you’ve done it with jk rowling but what are your thoughts on it as a general idea?

fanonical answered:

okay, but you’re not going to like the answer.

here’s the truth: you can’t separate the art from the artist. not entirely. HP Lovecraft was an incredibly talented, but much more incredibly racist man. It would nice to say you don’t agree with his views but you can enjoy his works without that leaking in but…. well, I’m afraid that would be misunderstanding his books entirely.

Consider, for a second, that Lovecraft’s works were horror stories about extradimensional alien monsters having mutant children with humans, they were about invasions from distant monsters, they were about the purity of quaint European towns being tainted. Consider how this may have all been inflicted by the fact that he just simply despised anybody who wasn’t white. Consider how is opinions on “mixing the races” might fight into this; consider why being unable to maintain the “purity” of white Europe was the scariest thing of all to him.

This extends to Rowling too.

I would love to say we can just acknowledge that she is an awful, racist, antisemitic, transphobic person and then say “but at least her books are good,” because, well, they are, aren’t they? I would say so, for sure. But to suggest that one can separate her from them is…. ridiculous.

Consider why an antisemitic woman wrote about a species of goblins who live among us, but who for the most part keep to themselvesand are maybe a little bit oppressed by the institution, but also hold all the cards, all the money, run the banks.

Consider why a racist woman would write about a species of slaves who loved being enslaved, who enjoyed working for no pay, and cleaning up after humans, with the only small caveat of that they didn’t want to be beaten. Imagine that only the most radical of their species wanted to be free, and he still spent the rest of his life working for no pay and helping out a little white boy and his friends wherever he could. Consider why the only person in the story who thought they should be free, that they should have rights, was treated as an overzealous joke, who was acting against the wishes of those slaves who really LOVE being enslaved. Consider that Rowling went on to say that she kind of considers that girl to be black, now.

Consider why JK Rowling, an open and proud transphobe, wrote Rita Skeeter as having a large square jaw, thick “manly” hands, and dressing incredibly gaudily with the most obvious fake nails and fake teeth and fake hair and fake everything. Consider why a woman who tweets about how trans women are “foxes pretending to be hens to get in the hen house” might write this Rita Skeeter to then illegally transform her body in order to spy on children.

Harry Potter is full of Rowling’s bigotry, start to finish. Not even tangentially, like, “oh the goblins are bad, Rita Skeeter is bad, the house elves are bad, but most of it’s good!” because the deeper you dig and the longer you think the more you realise the entire story is based on her prejudices.

Harry Potter pretends to be an aracial story about found family, but if that were true, why are Harry’s distant ancestors important to who he is today even in the seventh book? Why does Harry have to live with his cousin and aunt and uncle? Because magic inherently prefers blood ties. Whilst Rowling was writing a story that seemed to say, “your heritage is not that important and doesn’t make you better than others” she was still writing a story about a boy who got all of his money through his bloodline, who was protected by living with his bloodline, no matter how evil, who was uniquely able to stop Voldemort because his bloodline passed down the invisibility cloak for generations and generations. Any step Harry takes he is compared to his perfect parents who were exactly like him — he looks just like his father, but he has his mother’s eyes, you know! — consider WHY a woman who is racist might’ve written a story like this. A story that on its surface, condemns a blood caste, but still in every step it takes, validates the idea that blood is thicker than water, and your geneological origin is what makes you special.

You can enjoy Harry Pottwr, of course you can. There are fantastic parts. I love a small group of teenagers deciding to become anarchies rebels and train to fight against fascism in secret. I love the murder mystery plots, I love how the series tells kids that it’s a good thing to be brave, and a good thing to fight injustice, and a good thing to challenge the government. But I cannot separate it from its author because it is such a product of its author. All of the structures of the world, the way things work in the universe, and drenched in Rowling’s beliefs, her bigotries. Of course they are: she made them.

Again. This doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy it. But I think we are past the day where we can pretend that disavowing a bigoted author is enough, and that that somehow separates the text from its bigotry. I think we are past the day where we can pretend that Harry Potter isn’t a deeply, inherently bigoted piece of media. Even the bits we love. I think we are beyond the day where we can truthfully pretend to separate it from her, because she is present through all of it. We MUST recognise its flaws. We MUST admit that she is in every part of it.

Reminder that Stonewall wasn’t about marriage equality. Stonewall was about police brutality. It was about systemic abuse and subordination. Stonewall was spearheaded by black trans women. As we celebrate Pride 2020, within the context of the Black Lives Matter riots, it’s imperative that we remember that.

Riots in protest of police brutality are the reason that we have more rights today. Do not forget your roots.

You can’t celebrate Pride while simultaneously condemning the Black Lives Matter riots and protests that are happening right now. Know your history.

A bird explaining to a hedgehog crossing so it doesn’t die.

!!! ok but that’s legitimately what it’s doing!! That’s a corvid right there (looks like a hooded crow, to be precise), which means it’s intelligent enough to recognize, a) cars are dangerous and streets should be treated with a certain degree of caution, b) this car’s slowing down for them–cars do that sometimes–which means they’re not in imminent danger, so it doesn’t have to fly away just yet, c) that hedgehog’s still gonna get killed if it doesn’t MOVE, FAST (cars can change speed very quickly and the hedgehog’s still in the way), and almost certainly also d) if the bird does nothing it gets a free lunch.

Y’all, Y’ALL. This bird is consciously deciding to put itself in danger in order to save the life of a very stupid creature. A creature which, if the bird did nothing, could be free food

i can’t - look if you follow me you know I have a thing for corvids, but this is - like!!! People are always saying “ah yes they have sub-human intelligence and don’t consider anything that isn’t immediately necessary for their own survival/pleasure,” but! Whether or not it can do philosophy, this crow is clearly demonstrating compassion. Even if it’s just the kind of compassion a toddler shows to a snail, a social creature that instinctively recognizes the potential for emotion in other beings, that’s still huge and cool and important and corvids!!! are! neat!!!

Also, by the car stopping for them, that hedgehog has two other species actively working to help it stay alive for no gain of their own.

Reminds me of that professor who said the beginning of civilization was when someone took care of another. The broken thigh bone thing.

“Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts. We are at our best when we serve others.” - Margaret Mead

I just wish I knew how to tell if Pangur is stable and not in danger.

on my way to the emergency clinic. gonna have them look her over and tell me whether she’s stable enough to come home with me until my regular clinic opens tomorrow. I just can’t take chances, not when it’s Pangur

they’re hospitalizing her over night, and will have an ultrasound specialist look at her tomorrow. I just want her to be okay

okay good news (I think)! they’ve ruled out a bunch of stuff, and are saying that it’s most likely either Pancreatitis (which she was hospitalized for about 5-6 years ago) or gastrointestinal inflammation (could be from a viral or bacterial infection, a bad batch of food, etc)

so she’s feeling like crap, but is stable with good vitals etc. they want to keep her on fluids until at least tomorrow, and will let me know then if can take her home.

Wednesday update: they said she’s stable but not improving, and want to potentially keep her hospitalized for 2 more days. the problem is the continued nausea, diarrhea, and refusal to eat - they’d like her to show interest in food again before sending her home.

now I’m bad at math, but uh. fuck. might want to……put out some kinda Product this week to help off-set all this 😬

all this + the further hospitalization for 2 more days (they haven’t emailed the invoice for that yet) has added up to ~$5,250.25, which Pangur is worth every cent of! but ooof

the amazon rainforest has been burning for 3 weeks, here’s some things you can do

monarobot:

Hey everyone sorry for the massive post, but the Amazon rainforest has been burning for 3 weeks now, the fires are raging so strong that cities kilometers away have been darkened by the ashes, and even if it’s small I think we can all do something about it. Here’s some info I’ve gathered:

The current Brazil president, far-right Jaír Bolsonaro, is a climate change denier, he’s withdrawn a lot of the protections that were in place to keep the rainforest safe, and he’s in favor of exploitation of the rainforest, because of this, there is no official media coverage to make the information reach the rest of the world.

From Sunrise Movement:

Fires are being started deliberately under Bolsonaro’s rule to illegally deforest indigenous land, people have died in the fires already. The video shows a Pataxó woman talking about it https://twitter.com/sunrisemvmt/status/1164180958666469376

Because of the defunding of the organizations that would protect the rainforest and the lack of media coverage, it’s hard to figure out what to do to help, but here’s what I’ve found out:

Here you can Sign the petition to Demand BlackRock stop financing Amazon destruction, Blackrock has the most money invested in the fossil fuel and agribusiness industries, and is a huge contributor to climate change https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/sign-the-petition-demand-blackrock-stop-financing-amazon-destruction?source=direct_link&referrer=group-amazon-watch

https://amazonwatch.org/donate

You can pledge solidarity with Brazil’s resistance and donate here: https://amazonwatch.org/take-action/pledge-solidarity-with-brazils-resistance

And there is this petition to stop the exploitation of the rainforest which you can sign: https://www.change.org/p/impedir-o-desmatamento-e-exploração-da-amazônia

Also:  https://www.ran.org/

feel free to add other resources and photos of what’s happening since my internet is being AWFUL and not letting me share pics.

DON’T SCROLL PAST THIS

for the last 2+ weeks, the Amazon has been catching fire. Yes, it’s the season where that’s normal but because of the sayings (aka incentive) of our new president, some farmers are taking advantage of that and intentionally setting the trees on fire. Yesterday, because of this, the sky of São Paulo looked like this. AT THREE IN THE AFTERNOON.

image
image

Hospitals of the northern states are filling up with people (especially children and seniors) claiming they can’t breathe properly. ALREADY ENDANGERED ANIMALS ARE DYING. THIS IS SERIOUS.

image
image
image
image

Germany and Norway, huge donators to the Amazon cause will stop sending money because they don’t see results (that can also be credited to our president, who has been tweeting angrily ever since - not because he cares about the environment, btw). That money gives this guy and his team equipment to save little guys like these:

image

THIS AFFECTS EVERYONE, NOT JUST BRAZILIANS. The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, and it’s being destroyed. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

If your country is holding elections, vote for someone who cares about this. Don’t let another Bolsonaro or another Trump have the power to do something and then do nothing. This is going to shape our future — if we have one.

PLEASE REBLOG, EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS!!

side note: not to sound bitter or ungrateful but also like what’s up with Europe… y’all exploited South America for centuries but just because you “aren’t seeing results” you stop helping altogether?? if you really wanted to help you wouldn’t stop because you think you aren’t helping lol

Please reblog to spread the news. This is important.

Horrible news about my beloved kidney disease cat, Loaf… She’s so severely anemic, that without immediate intervention she will be gone within days.  She needs an $1800 blood transfusion as soon as possible.  Please, please help me pay for this blood transfusion.

I’m at my credit card limit, I’ve thrown over $12,000 into her treatments in the last year.  I’ve cut everything possible from my budget.  If she gets this blood transfusion, she will feel so much better.  It won’t cure her, but she will not suffocate from within as anemia does.

I’m so sorry to ask like this.  I won’t be able to live with myself if I don’t try. Please help her.
